After you arrive you will want the freedom to explore and meet with letting agents, schools and attend job interviews and hiring a car in Australia can be the most efficient way to get around, especially in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and the other smaller cities that don’t have large public transport networks as Sydney and Melbourne do. You can either collect a hire car at the airport when you arrive or arrange to pick one up a few days after you’ve arrived.
It is often much cheaper to book a hire car a few months ahead and negotiate a rate based on longer term hire. This will reduce the pressure to buy a car, give you more choice to find one that suits your needs better and negotiate a better deal than “pressure buying”. If you pre-book a car from overseas then you also usually are given an unlimited mileage rental as opposed to limited daily mileage if you arrange one when you arrive.
